Denver is known for its breweries, both small and local and national. The local breweries are great place to go and socialize, try new brews and see what all the fuss is about. Here are a few of the best.
The Avery Brewing Company is a small brewery that has produced craft beers since 1993. It’s located in Boulder, Colorado and brews beer all year round. They also make great seasonal beers which have received praise from brewing competitions and festivals such as The Kaiser Imperial Oktoberfest at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival. It was founded by Adam Avery and is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado.
The Wynkoop Brewing Company is a brewpub founded in 1988 by Colorado’s 42nd Governor John Hickenlooper with partners Russell Schehrer, Mark Schiffler, and Jerry Williams. Wynkoop sponsors the “Beer Drinker of the Year” competition, hosted yearly in one of the banquet halls at the brewery. It also has a large billiards hall on its top floor.
The Great Divide Brewing Company was founded by Brian Dunn in 1994 in Denver, Colorado. Just after starting its brews, it won the first of the brewery’s twelve Great American Beer Festival and four World Beer Cup awards. Great Divide Brewing Company was founded on the idea that beer could be brewed stronger. Typical beer in the US has an alcohol content of less than 7%. Six of the thirteen beers made by Great Divide in 2006 exceeded this threshold, and one, Old Ruffian, has over 10.2% alcohol content, which is twice that of America’s top selling beer Budweiser. Their brew, Denver Pale Ale, has won more national and international awards than any other Colorado beer.
The Boulder Beer Company was Colorado’s first microbrew. It was founded by David Hummer, Alvin Nelson, and Randolf Ware in September of 1979. Ware and Hummer were physics professors at the University of Colorado Boulder. The Boulder Beer Company was originally known as the Boulder Brewing Company and changed its name in 1990 to its current name. The company is very civic minded and environmentally conscious.
The Tommyknocker Brewery has been brewing craft beer for more than 20 years. It has been awarded over 100 medals from a multitude of local, national and international competitions, including 17 GABF medals. It’s located in Idaho Springs, Colorado which is just 30 miles west of Denver right off Interstate 70.
